Free Book Downloads-Part 9

Free ebooks this week include an e-ARC (advance reader’s copy, as in not yet available to the general riff raff), a book from a small Canadian publisher and some novels based on the BBC’s most famous science fiction show.

Order Doggone @ amazon.comA publisher newly participating in LibraryThing.com’s Early Reviewer program is making Doggone by Erik Ryman available for download on Tuesday, August 26th. Go to the LibraryThing thread to see the URL (it’s not posted as I write this and I’m Internet-less as you read this). Here’s the description:

The Government has sold the country to a supermarket on eBay, only for the Civil Service to buy it back and launch their own benign dictatorship. Ten years on, it is all going horribly wrong. There are Hairshirts on every corner, the incompetent Leader and his transvestite first lady pole dance and the dogs are being systematically eradicated to deflect attention from the ruling Department’s failure to achieve their promises. “Doggone” is a modern fable, a surreal and bizarre satire on a world of spin, greed, excess and the dangers of letting politicians rule unchecked. It is also very funny.

You can download Yellowknife by Steve Zipp. I can’t find this book in any database, or anywhere other than the publisher’s site (as far as I can determine, this is a legitimate small press). Still, it’s free to try. Here’s the description from the publisher’s site:

The time is 1998. The millennium looms. Yellowknife, capital of one-third of Canada and home to beasts and bureaucrats, is about to become a major player in the world diamond market. Stir in a little crime, a dash of sex, some hunting and fishing, not to mention hockey, videogames, lost explorers, crazed biologists, and spectacular scenery. The perfect setting for mystery and adventure.

If you like Dr. Who, you can download some classic Dr. Who books courtesy of the BBC. Only two are PDFs, but the rest are in easily convertible HTML format for viewing offline.

Happy reading! If none of the above appealed to you, try BookCloseOuts (not free, but cheap) or check out the archives.
