Release October 2008 (The Story Plant) * 380 pages * ISBN 13: 9780981608716
How many people consider where the crops came from when they buy food at the supermarket or go to a fast food drivethrough? How many don’t bother worrying about it because there’s government regulation, and the government knows what it’s doing, right? And if it doesn’t, there’s so many more things that need immediate attention.
What you really need is a nice, peaceful book to curl up with to escape reality for a while. Well, I’m sorry but that’s not the book I’m giving away in this post. What I have is a medical thriller that will stick with you after you read it because not only is it a good thriller in its own right, but it’s also perfectly plausible with our current biotechnology and regulation. It could happen tomorrow. But for now, it’s just a really good read.
I’ll be posting my review later this week, but here’s what it’s about:
Gwen Maulder is an FDA scientist whose best friend Marci, a young lawyer, dies suddenly and spectacularly of a seizure while in court. Everyone else dismisses it as a rare and unfortunate occurrence, but Gwen just can’t believe that. Her friend was young and healthy despite her high-stress lifestyle and poor, but not unusual, eating habits. Gwen has a nagging feeling that there is more to her best friend’s death than simple bad luck.
As Gwen starts investigating her friend’s death she finds herself the target of some very influential people who clearly want her to accept her friend’s death and move on. The more she investigates, the more perplexing her friend’s death becomes and the more forceful the opposition to her efforts. Before she is done, she is fighting to save the lives not only of the people around her, but also of everyday people who are blissfully unaware of the danger lurking in their daily routine waiting to claim more lives … unless Gwen can live long enough to stop it.
You can read Chapter 1 on the book’s site (no download necessary).

I honestly don’t know if I’ve had any genetically modified food, so can’t really comment on it, plus I’m not very knowledgeable about it. I suppose I wouldn’t be too concerned if, a few years down the line, they confirm there’s no long term side effects after observing a control group.
And lastly, I almost didn’t see it, but there’s [Edited by Anysia: Yes, there is

I love medical thrillers and this one sounds really good. The topic is very scary and I’m sure we have no idea how much goes on with our food. I’ve added this to my blog and I’ve subscribed to yours. Thanks for your contests!

I am concerned about genetically modified foods. It can’t be good for you to eat things that have been modified in this way. I know I have eaten cheese made with cloned ingredients. I’m pretty sure most of us have.
I think I see [Edited by Anysia: Yes, you do.

Yes, definitely, genetically modified foods concern me. Mankind has a tendency to jump first and look afterwards; not a wise policy especially when messing with nature.
If I have eaten genetically modified food, I did not do so deliberately.

Yes GM foods concern me. If taking steroids by human is bad, then eating something that has steroids injected into it is even worse. Using chemicals to yield a higher profit with crops is a terrible thing to do.
I have never eaten GM foods. Unless I didn’t know about it. Yikes
I would love to win!
Please enter me–I’d love to read this as a vegetarian!

As for your questions:
I am interested in genetically modified food and it should concern everyone b/c there could be consequences in the longterm that we’ve yet to discover.
That said, I do eat genetically modified foods (such as apples, wheat, etc).
The hidden message on the cover is [Edited by Anysia]. To me, this means that the government could be threatening the public’s health through hidden agendas that are not readily apparent unless one looks beneath the surface.
