It’s the holiday season for many people, so Hachette is having some of its popular 5-pack-o-books giveaways. And guess who gets to give some away? That’s right, little ‘ol me. This is the December giveaway, so it’s not the entertainment pack that some of you may have entered to win in November. These packs are a little different because you have a choice of 3 different sets of books themed around Christmas, Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa. I’ll let the 5 winners pick whichever set they want — everyone gets their first choice.
The books in the three packs are listed below. You can click on the title or the cover to go check out the book on Hachette’s site. Scroll down past the books to see all the fine print about entering the giveaway (sorry, gotta have it).

Giveaway Details
Eligibility
- Open to residents of the United States and Canada. Sorry, you must have a street address (no P.O. boxes) to enter. Shipping courtesy of Hachette Book Group. I do have a worldwide giveaway coming up in February for this book for those who aren’t eligible for this one.
- You must be contactable. If I can’t reach you, you can’t win.
The Book
The winners will each receive a 5 book pack of their choice: Happy Hanukkah Pack, Happy Kwanzaa Pack, or Merry Christmas Pack. No mixing of books between packs is allowed.
How to Enter
There are a number of ways to enter, depending on how many entries you want. The list only looks long. You can do only #1 and be done. The extra ways to enter just increase your chances of winning (pick any or none of them or come back later and do more of them):
- Post a comment on this post saying that you want to be entered (1 entry). Any comment you make on this thread that makes it clear you’re entering the giveaway qualifies, so no need to make a separate comment just to collect this entry if you are doing any of the others). If you want more entries, keep reading. If one’s enough for you, thanks for coming by and don’t forget to check out the other freebies on the site and the other book blogger giveaways in the sidebar.
- Help me keep in touch:
- Subscribe to my RSS feed in a reader OR by e-mail (no need to do both) and tell me in your comment (2 entries). If you are already a subscriber let me know and I’ll give you the entries too.
- Follow me on Twitter (1 entry). If you already follow me on Twitter, remind me when you post and I’ll give you the entries too.
- Help me publicize this giveaway:
- Blog about this giveaway and link back here OR link to this giveaway on your blog sidebar (3 entries).
- Show me you’re interested in the book by telling me about a favourite holiday tradition, favourite holiday memory, or favourite holiday food/meal or other form of holiday story (5 entries — you only get to collect this once so think about it a bit if you need to). Give me at least a sentence or two. Make it good, because one pack of books may go to the person with the best comment/story (and by best I of course mean whatever strikes me as most interesting or most touching or most witty or most something. It’s completely subjective and if nothing strikes my fancy I’ll do all random drawings). I just want to learn more about the different ways people celebrate.
Deadlines
This giveaway has 5 prize packs of 5 books each so there are several closing dates (ALL entries count for ALL draws):
On December 1, 2008 I will draw up to 2 winners based on the number of unique entries on November 30 at 11:59 pm Mountain Standard Time. If there are at least 12 unique entries I’ll draw one winner/at least 24 unique entries I’ll draw two winners.
On December 8, 2008 I will draw up to 2 winners (or more if the weren’t enough unique entries the previous week) based on the number of unique entries on December 7 at 11:59 pm Mountain Standard Time. If there are at least 36 unique entries by this time I’ll draw one more winner/if there at least 48 unique entries by this time I’ll draw two winners.
On December 15, 2008 I will award the last pack of books. I hope to award this one to the best comment on holiday traditions/memories/foods as of December 14 at 11:59 pm Mountain Standard Time. As I said above, “best” is subjective. If there are no comments that particularly stand out, I will do a random drawing instead.
The winners will be announced and e-mailed the day after the drawings (unless I’m swamped, but I’ll try not to be). If the winners don’t reply to the e-mail notification within 72 hours, new winners will be drawn.
Take a Moment to Visit . . .

Every Christmas we make a paper chain with red and green strips of paper. On them we write something fun to do like drink eggnog, read a christmas story, go for a winter walk etc.. As an advent calendar, every day we take one done and do what it says. It’s a great way to count down to Christmas!

Now for the family tradition. This changed about about 20 years ago to different family members are in charge of cooking different things, we rent the Elks club, we all eat together, we meet the Sunday before Christmas and my grandfather is gone now but the feeling is still the same.
Until my grandparents were in their early 80s my grammy cooked a turkey and a ham for Christmas day. My family usually was the first there since we had over 100 miles to travel and often came the night before or very early in the morning to avoid getting snowed out. Grammy had pies, bread, cinnamin rolls, all the fixing that go into Christmas dinner. Nothing was store bought except maybe the milk. Not everyone made it, most years we averaged 80 to 100 people. The kitchen table sat 8 so as people arrived they sat down and ate. when they finished they did up the dishes and reset the table so the next group or family could eat. For some it was a short stop between trips to the in-laws for others it was a time for the 11 siblings to get together and tell stories, reminisce and laugh. Granny always made like she was mad when we joked and called her stove the crematorium. She didn’t burn the food. It was a wood stove and the napkins and bones got burned, she just didn’t really think we should mention that while people were still eating. Even though Grammy did all the cooking there was always more than enough. By nightfall everyone remaining was too stuffed to move. Grammy didn’t allow anyone to bring in any food. She said it was her day to do for family. We sometimes tried to come up with ways to lessen the amount of work like the year my sister and I ate suppper off teh same plate so we would only have to wash one plate not the two we had already washed for dinner. Besides all the dish towels were so wet by that time they just moved the water around so we told Grammy we were doing her a favor. She got “even” later that night by giving my sister Essence of Peppermint for an upset stomach. I made a point of not telling he I didn’t feel well either. Grammy’s treatments usually worked but they were not something you willingly took and never more than once. To this day Christmas at Grammy’s brings the story of Essence of Peppermint from my sister though she has forgotten about sharing a plate to avoid dishes. Grammy is nearly 102 now and lives in a nursing home. ONe of my cousins owns the house. But we all still get together to talk and laugh and celebrate at Christmas.

The Merry Christmas book set looks great! I am so looking forward to Christmas, all the family gets together with lots of food and laughter and noise-but I love it!
My favorite holiday tradition is one that my dad started when I was little. Every year when it was time to put up the Christmas decorations he would get out his Elvis Christmas record and we would listen as we decorated. When I went to college I picked up a cassette tape of Elvis Christmas music so that I could continue the tradition when I decorated my dorm room, and then later decorated my first apartment with my husband. I’ve kept that tape and have listened to it every year since then at Christmas time, only now my kids help me decorate the house to Elvis music. I know that sometime soon I will need to pick up a cd to replace the tape (especially since we only have one tape player left in our house). I don’t plan on giving up the tradition.

Every year my son and daughter-in-law have an open house on Christmas Eve. All the relatives on both sides and lots of friends are invited. Everyone brings something so it’s not to much work for them. The adults talk and enjoy catching up with their lives. The children have a great time running around and playing. The next day my daughter and son-in-law have Christmas for the family. We have a great meal. Again everyone brings something. We then open gifts. I especially enjoy watching the children who are so excited. It’s a wonderful time of year and I’m grateful for my wonderful family!

Oh, I would love to be entered, and you are already in my google reader.
My favorite Christmas tradition didn’t start until I was in middle school or high school. My sister and I were terrible present snoopers, so my mom decided she needed to do something to combat that. She stopped putting our names on the presents under the tree and started putting different nicknames each year (Donner and Blitzen, Kermit and Miss Piggy, etc.). On Christmas Eve we would get to open a present like an ornament or flannel pajamas that told us what our nickname was for the year, so we knew what presents to open the next day.

1. I am interested in fact I want…the Christmas pack! : )
2. Holiday tradition….ever since I can remember my mom has tucked a small wrapped gift into the Christmas tree (a gift for me and one for each of my brothers). Then once the Holiday was over and the tree was disrobed with decoractions all packed away, we were able to open our “tree gift”. To me this became a way to stretch the season out….it didn’t end after all the presents were opened on Christmas Day. I thank my mom for this tradition for it wasn’t until I had moved away from home that I started to esperience the emotional let down after the holiday…..I think this tradition in childhood derailed that emotion. I’m happy to say, that the tradition is continued in my household …..the tree gifts!
Thanks so much

My favorite holiday traditions are the giant stockings that my mother started making when I was little. I remember digging into the stocking that was as tall as I was. My mom has made the same size of stockings for my husband and children, so now I get to watch my kids empty them just like my parents watched me! I think the stockings are often as exciting as the presents under the tree.

I would love to win the Christmas pack. I already am a subscriber to your blog. My favorite Christmas tradition is our Jesse tree. Every night during advent we read a Bible passage and pin picture that represents it to a felt tree that we have hanging in the living room. It helps us remember, as a family, what Christmas is about.

- I have so many Christmas traditions and memories that I cherish. We became engaged on Christmas Eve, my oldest son was born on Dec. 22nd, my brother became engaged on Christmas Eve, the list goes on and on. But one of my favorite memories was when my two oldest children outsmarted us. My husband and I stay up late every year putting together gifts and watching A Christmas Story marathon (”you’ll shoot your eye out!”) until the wee hours of the morning. When my kids were 9 mths. 3 1/2 yrs. and 5 yrs. we got them a electric powered jeep to ride on. We were up until 3:00 a.m. putting it together and charging the battery. We put a huge red ribbon on the top, checked all of the presents and headed to bed. As a precaution, we locked the door with the hook and eye latch that’s up at the top of the door. Since they wouldn’t be unwrapping the jeep we wanted to make sure we went into the room with them in the morning to see their excited little faces when they saw their big gift. We went to sleep knowing they would be up and in our room in just a few hours. We woke up later than expected with no kids in our faces and it was too quiet upstairs. We checked their rooms and they were empty, even the baby’s room. We hurried down the stairs just knowing we would have very anxious kids. The door was shut but it wasn’t locked. We opened it and all three of them, even the baby, were sitting in their jeep! We had no idea how they did it. They were so proud because they helped the baby out of his crib and down the stairs. Then they took the broom and raised it up to the lock and popped the hook out of the eye! They had been riding back and forth for almost an hour. They only had about 15 feet of space in that room and it was too narrow to turn around so they were just going forward and then reverse, over and over again. But they took turns! We were so shocked but it was the funniest thing to see. It’s only one of many stories we tell our now teenagers but it’s one of the best. Sorry I rambled but thanks for letting me relive that one. Happy Holidays!

Our favorite Christmas traditions are the ones my mother, who was born and raised in Sweden, started with my siblings and me when we were young and all of us have continued it with our own families. In Sweden, Christmas is celebrated on the 24th of December. So we get two Christmases! Our Swedish Christmas goes like this: On the 24th we have a smorgasbord with Swedish meatballs, lingonberry sauce, pig’s feet (which is really cocktail weenies with the ends cut in an X so they look like pig’s feet when cooked), boiled potatoes, and so forth. The father of the family always leaves to “pick up a newspaper” but he really goes in the garage, puts on his heaviest winter coat and a ski mask, grabs the bag of presents and then rings the doorbell. He is playing the part of the Jul Tomten (Christmas elf), but he looks more like the Jul Burglar in our family’s traditions! I always wonder what the neighbors think… He hands out presents, goes out the front door and comes in through the garage, leaving his Tomten ‘costume’ in the garage and bringing in a newspaper of some sort. We all tell him that he missed the Tomten’s visit AGAIN, and he holds up the newspaper to explain where he has been.
It’s a fun tradition, and reminds us of our heritage!
I would love to win the Christmas pack. These look great!
My favorite holiday tradition is Christmas morning at my mom’s. We always have breakfast tacos and sausage balls. The first thing we always did into is our stocking. It’s great fun!

It has become a Christmas Eve tradition in my family to read a book called “Claude the Dog”. It’s about a well loved dog who gives all his gifts to a homeless dog. It’s a wonderful book to teach our kids (and remind ourselves!) that it’s about the giving, not just the getting. I look forward to reading it to my four year old granddaughter this year. And just like every other year, I will read with tears in my eyes and know that we are blessed.

This is one of my mother’s Christmas memories of me. Mom took me shopping & to see Santa at Macy’s Dept. Store years ago… how many years we won’t say! Mom said when it was my turn to tell Santa what I wanted for Christmas he offered me a candy cane and I answered, “My mom buys my candy. I’m not supposed to take candy from strangers.” Poor Santa. I think I probably got a gift from him that year anyway despite the snub…:>
I LIKE THE CHRISTMAS BOOKS TO SHARE WITH THE LITTLE KIDS AT THE CHILDRENS HOSPITAL. CHRISTMAS IS FOR THE VERY LITTLE CHILDREN.
I WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT TO SHARE WITH OTHERS THAT DON’T HAVE. EACH CHRISTMAS WE WOULD GO TO THE VERY POOREST HOMES AND LEAVE A BOX OF TOYS FOR THE LITTLE KIDS AND FOOD FOR A CHRISTMAS MEAL. WE SET THE BOX ON THE PORCH, RING THE DOOR BELL, AND RUN. ONE TIME I HEARD A LADY SAY, OH THANK YOU JESUS FOR THE KIDS WOULD HAVE NOTHING IF IT WASN’T FOR THIS. SO WHO HAS THE MOST HAPPINESS FROM THE GIFT: THE LADY, THE KIDS, OR ME? I THINK IT IS ME; AS I STILL REMEMBER THE EVENT AND I AM TELLING YOU ABOUT IT NOW. IT’S ONLY THROUGH SHARING WITH OTHERS THAT ONE RECEIVES THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT OF ALL AND THAT’S HAPPINESS IN LIFE. SO I TELL YOU TO SHARE WITH THOSE WHO DON’T HAVE SO THAT YOU WILL RECEIVE THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS IN YOUR OWN HEART.

Every Christmas, my grandparents would buy everyone in the family (my mom, my aunt, my brother and me) a new set of pajamas. On New Year’s Eve, we would all wear our new pajamas and hold money in our hand’s when the new year came in. The tradition states that if you hold a piece of money and wear new clothes when midnight strikes, you’ll want for nothing. It’s a tradition I still follow. I got my husband and 3-year-old doing it as well.

When I was a little girl, my sister and I were not allowed to leave our room on Christmas morning until we heard Christmas music playing. This was to prevent us from tearing up the living room before my poor parents woke up, of course. But the nice thing is that now, whenever I hear Christmas music, I remember that unique excitement of Christmas morning as a child, the anticipation and delight.

I think this is a great give-away. That’s why I am entering. I thank you for this one. Keeping my fingers crossed. Have a Happy Holiday.
When my 7 children were younger we would always fill a basket with food and then buy a few gifts for the children and families who didn’t have anything. Names would be put on a Christmas tree in our Church. We’d pick one and give our gifts to the church to pass out. My children often said they were happy to help others. Of course the littlest ones would say “Don’t worry Mom, Santa willl bring them presents and food.”
So it was explained to them that our gifts were in addition to Santa’s.
One of my favorite Christmas memories is a request that my grandmother used to make. She always wanted me to make Watergate Salad (or the green stuff as she called it). Then, whatever was left, she would keep. She passed away in October 2000, but I continue to make it, with her in mind each year!
This is way more then could be imagined. WOW!!!
The Christmas pack looks wonderful.
My Mom loved Christmas and our house was beautifully decorated for the holidays. Christmas dinner was always at our house and my Aunt and Uncle and Grandmother would come over. I have such wonderful memories of Christmas as a child.
I’d love to win the Christmas pack of books.
I would love the Christmas book set. Thanks on Thanksgiving Day.
I would love to win the set of Hanukkah books.
My memory of Hanukkah is when I was under 12 years of age, we used to get a silver dollar or a silver 50 cent piece. We ate latkes that my mother — or father! — used to make…either with applesauce or sour cream to top it off.
Every night we lit another candle in the menorah, and we lit at least three menorahs at the same time.
I would sit alongside at the piano and accompany the singing of “Maoz Tsur” with my one-finger note playing.

It was our first Christmas as a married couple. My husband wanted a slide projector ( it was 1973) and I had probed a bit to determine which one he was most interested in. I couldn’t afford to buy it all at once, so I paid a deposit, and just 2 days before Christmas went to the store to pay the balance and pick it up. It really was lightweight, one of the features the salesperson mentioned when I wa shopping.
You can imagine my surprise when the gift I had wrapped so beautifully was opened. It contained the slide tray, the case and the cord! The actual projector was still in the shop window! For a first Christmas together, that was definitely memorable!
Helen, that’s too funny. I want to thank everyone who has shared their memories and traditions so far. It’s been really interesting for me and I hope for others too.
My daughter works in a children’s chemo ward. Maybe the Paper Bag Christmas would bring some encouragement to her patients.
Would love to win the christmas book pack.
I would love to win the Christmas pack! I already loaded up my ipod with Christmas music and I’m ready for Christmas!
Would love to have the Merry Xmas one, hadn’t won anything in a long time…And I don’t have anything Christmasy.
The Christmas books look wonderful! I’d love to be entered in the drawing!
My favorite Christmas memory is one of my first dates with the man who is now my husband. This was a new relationship, and I wasn’t sure if he was really serious about me or not. We started the day Christmas shopping and getting to know each other by sharing our favorite family traditions. He told me that in his family, the newest member of the family always placed the angel on top of the tree. Later that evening, he invited me to help him with his Christmas decorating. When we were almost finished, he handed me the angel and asked if I would put it on top of the tree. With that, I knew he was telling me I was going to part of his family, and we were engaged within months!
Thanks for the chance to win!
My favorite Christmas memory is getting up in the middle of the night to look in my stocking and I found a little magic trick that made a penny disappear the reappear…I thought it was the coolest present

My favorite holiday tradition is on christmas eve. We do a Scandinavian smorgasbord. We have pickled herring, head cheese, lingonberries, swedish meatballs, potato sausage(from a small deli in downtown Chicago it is to die for!!!), havarti chees, sharp cheddar cheese, dill potatoes and much more that I can’t remember. It is a great way to celebrate our heritage, my moms mom was swedish and moms dad was norwegian, and expose the next generation to traditional foods.
Enter me to win these fabulous books please, and have a happy holiday season, whatever you celebrate!!!
