Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst (Giveaway!)

This edition released December 2008 (Little, Brown and Company) * 384 pages * ISBN 13: 9780316033497

Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst

I have a confession to make. I may, on occasion, just for a minute or two, watch a reality TV show — or two, or three. This is usually accompanied by a lot of eyerolling from my other half, but the TV stays on. My favourite show I won’t miss (the others I can take or leave) is The Amazing Race.

It’s not so much that it’s a bunch of Americans running around the world complaining about the “foreigners” who don’t speak English (although that’s good for a laugh or two), but the dynamics between the contestants within and between teams that interest me. I’m often left wondering what goes on behind the scenes and why these pairs of people would put themselves through all of this (aside from the money which only one team gets). It’s often obvious that the contestants are dealing with “issues” but you never see what goes on behind the scenes. You also have to wonder how much of the contestants’ “personalities” are staged.

That’s the premise of Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst. There’s a game show, there’s slogging around the world doing meaningless tasks chasing a pot of money, but it’s more about the contestants than the contest. At least, as far as I can tell. I wasn’t going to offer this book on my blog, but I went and read the first chapter and was hooked. So while I’m waiting for my review copy I’m going to give you a chance to win your very own copy courtesy of Hachette Book Group.

Here is Hachette’s description of the book:

A suburban mom, her troubled daughter, divorced brothers, former child stars, born-again Christians, and some young millionaires have all been selected to compete on LOST AND FOUND, a daring new reality show. In pairs of two, they will race across the world to compete for a million-dollar prize. The only question is not only who will capture the big jackpot, but at what price.

Interested? There’s more information on amazon.com (where it’s called a muted satire) or you can read Chapter 1 on Hachette’s site (no download necessary).

No, I don’t watch reality shows regularly. Most of them are so horrible, like the ones on MTV and stuff. Amerian Idol is okay. “Go, David!”

I’d love to be entered! This looks like an intriguing premise for a book, a nice fun read. I’ll admit that I am guilty of watching the occasional reality TV show. I tend to like shows that involve some form of creation–Project Runway is a favorite, as well as any show that has people baking some kind of improbably fabulous cake. But I think my greatest love is So You Think You Can Dance. In spite of all the schmaltzy trappings, I find myself constantly in awe of how those kids can move. Thanks for the chance at winning!

This book sounds great! I’d love a chance to win a copy.

My interest in reality TV waxes and wanes. When Survivor debuted, I watched it religiously… then I kind of lost interest. A couple of years later, during the All Star season, I started watching it again. I stayed for three or four seasons past that, then drifted away from it again. I always liked the interaction between the contestants best, and I also found it interesting to see how each contestant came across. You could tell that the producers wanted a particular person to be the Bad Guy, someone else to be the Sexy Chick, etc. And of course, it was fun to pick favourites and cheer them on, even though they couldn’t hear me. :)

I LOVE The Amazing Race. My mom and I are hooked on it! And we get so anxious about certain teams each time. I always watch tv. And to make sure that I never miss my favorite shows, I have a DVR (digital video recorder) that can record 2 shows at a time and let me watch a show that’s already been recorded while it’s recording the 2 shows! I always have it set to record the Amazing Race.

I think this might be one book that I can get my mom to read after I am done with it!

I don’t watch a lot of the popular reality shows, but I faithfully watch Amazing Race and Biggest Looser. I enjoy watching the interactions between people on the same team and also the tasks that they are given that are representative of work people in foreign places have to do to earn a living. On Biggest Looser, I get so excited for the contestants as they loose weight each week.

I also watch Bobby Flay’s Throwdown. It’s fun seeing nonfamous people who are known in their area for making the best mac & cheese or chili or whatever and then competing against Bobby with their specialty.

I would to get a chance to read this book. Many poeple have recommended it to me, but i haven’t had the chance to read it yet. Please consider me! Reading is my passion.

I watch a few reality shows like Project Runway, Top Design, Hell’s Kitchen, Charm School, and others as well. There’s just too many for me to watch them all. I don’t watch all of them, only the ones that catch my attention.

I do not watch reality shows. Most are just plain silly, IMO and life is too short.

I am a reality tv junkie and I watch it all the time! If I don’t automatically know a reality tv show that’s on, I will search the channel listing guide onscreen until I find something. One of my favorites right now is John and Kate Plus Eight. But I’ll watch any of them from the higher quality Amazing Race to the bottom of the barrel Rock of Love.

    I do watch reality shows.
The idea of a reality show really bothers me, but somehow I got hooked way back with The Real World! Of course, I’ve long outgrown that, but since Survivor took to the airways, I’ve been watching that. I watched The Apprentice for a few seasons. I LOVE the Amazing Race. And recently got hooked on Project Runway

Hmmmm….I don’t really watch reality shows except ANTM because my daughter loves it and we watch together. I don’t enjoy reality shows because I like to avoid reality these days. My son died 2 years ago and I am always looking to escape my reality.
