This edition released December 2008 (Little, Brown and Company) * 384 pages * ISBN 13: 9780316033497

I have a confession to make. I may, on occasion, just for a minute or two, watch a reality TV show — or two, or three. This is usually accompanied by a lot of eyerolling from my other half, but the TV stays on. My favourite show I won’t miss (the others I can take or leave) is The Amazing Race.
It’s not so much that it’s a bunch of Americans running around the world complaining about the “foreigners” who don’t speak English (although that’s good for a laugh or two), but the dynamics between the contestants within and between teams that interest me. I’m often left wondering what goes on behind the scenes and why these pairs of people would put themselves through all of this (aside from the money which only one team gets). It’s often obvious that the contestants are dealing with “issues” but you never see what goes on behind the scenes. You also have to wonder how much of the contestants’ “personalities” are staged.
That’s the premise of Lost and Found by Carolyn Parkhurst. There’s a game show, there’s slogging around the world doing meaningless tasks chasing a pot of money, but it’s more about the contestants than the contest. At least, as far as I can tell. I wasn’t going to offer this book on my blog, but I went and read the first chapter and was hooked. So while I’m waiting for my review copy I’m going to give you a chance to win your very own copy courtesy of Hachette Book Group.
Here is Hachette’s description of the book:
A suburban mom, her troubled daughter, divorced brothers, former child stars, born-again Christians, and some young millionaires have all been selected to compete on LOST AND FOUND, a daring new reality show. In pairs of two, they will race across the world to compete for a million-dollar prize. The only question is not only who will capture the big jackpot, but at what price.
Interested? There’s more information on amazon.com (where it’s called a muted satire) or you can read Chapter 1 on Hachette’s site (no download necessary).

No, I don’t watch reality shows regularly. Most of them are so horrible, like the ones on MTV and stuff. Amerian Idol is okay. “Go, David!”
I have been subscribed to you in my Google Reader for (I think) a month now . That is how I found out about this contest! I don’t remember how I found out about your blog, but I love it!

This book sounds like a really fun read. I watch the last 10 or 15 minutes of Next Top Model and Hell’s Kitchen to see who was eliminated. I’ve only ever seen part of one episode of Amazing Race and have never seen any episode of any of the Survivor series.
I would really enjoy reading this book! I am a subscriber of your feed and email newsletter. The only show I watch that I consider a reality show is “Extreme Makeover Home Edition!” Thanks for another great book giveaway drawing. Many thanks……Cindi
Please enter my name in your giveaway for this “muted satire”!

I’d love to be entered! This looks like an intriguing premise for a book, a nice fun read. I’ll admit that I am guilty of watching the occasional reality TV show. I tend to like shows that involve some form of creation–Project Runway is a favorite, as well as any show that has people baking some kind of improbably fabulous cake. But I think my greatest love is So You Think You Can Dance. In spite of all the schmaltzy trappings, I find myself constantly in awe of how those kids can move. Thanks for the chance at winning!
Ooh, please enter me!
I love reality television. I live for it! Some of my favorites are Survivor, Amazing Race, ANTM, Ghost Hunters…just to name a few.
I’m not much for reality TV I’m afraid. Sorry. But I do love to read and would love this book.

This book sounds great! I’d love a chance to win a copy.
My interest in reality TV waxes and wanes. When Survivor debuted, I watched it religiously… then I kind of lost interest. A couple of years later, during the All Star season, I started watching it again. I stayed for three or four seasons past that, then drifted away from it again. I always liked the interaction between the contestants best, and I also found it interesting to see how each contestant came across. You could tell that the producers wanted a particular person to be the Bad Guy, someone else to be the Sexy Chick, etc. And of course, it was fun to pick favourites and cheer them on, even though they couldn’t hear me.

I LOVE The Amazing Race. My mom and I are hooked on it! And we get so anxious about certain teams each time. I always watch tv. And to make sure that I never miss my favorite shows, I have a DVR (digital video recorder) that can record 2 shows at a time and let me watch a show that’s already been recorded while it’s recording the 2 shows! I always have it set to record the Amazing Race.
I think this might be one book that I can get my mom to read after I am done with it!
Thank you for the opportunity to win this book. The only reality show I still watch is American Idol. i used to watch Survivor, Biggest Loser, Next Top Model and The Apprentice, but just lost interest.

I like some reality tv shows but I’d watch more if I had cable and time to watch them. Right now all I watch is Survivor but if I had cable I’d watch America’s Next Top Model, Canadian Idol, The Amazing Race and Project Runway.

I would love to be entered for this book. I’ve commented, subscribed, and already follow you on twitter. This sounds very similar to the Amazing Race which is the one reality show that I record and watch without fail.
I would love to win this book.
I do watch 3 reality shows religiously. Those are The Biggest Loser, The Amazing Race and Survivor.
Thanks!
I try and stay away from reality shows only because I get too caught up in them.
I loved the earlier seasons of the Apprentice, and I couldn’t turn away from the train wreck that was Rock of Love.

I love reality shows, I follow Hells Kitchen, The Biggest Loser, America’s Top Model, Survivor, and the Amazing Race. I also watch others like Dancing with the stars, American Idol, etc. I love to see to what lengths people will stretch to win money or a title, etc. I love the raw side. People showing their lowest moments, also the overcoming of those moments.
thanks for sharing, sounds like a great book

I’ll definitely start reading your blog. I love to read books, and love to read blogs. And giveaways? How wonderful. So please count me in for your contest. And for a second chance - no, I am not much for reality shows. For some reason, I just don’t seem to get into them. Unless American Idol or Dancing With the Stars are reality shows. I do watch some reality shows, mostly competition reality shows like Top Chef, Top Designer, Project Runway. The talent of the contestants really blows me away and inspires me. I do indulge in some guilty pleasure sometimes and watch *gasp* Real Housewives or Rock of love *gasp, gasp*. Its kind of like a train wreck: you know you shouldn’t look, but still you are strangely compelled to peek.

I don’t watch a lot of the popular reality shows, but I faithfully watch Amazing Race and Biggest Looser. I enjoy watching the interactions between people on the same team and also the tasks that they are given that are representative of work people in foreign places have to do to earn a living. On Biggest Looser, I get so excited for the contestants as they loose weight each week.
I also watch Bobby Flay’s Throwdown. It’s fun seeing nonfamous people who are known in their area for making the best mac & cheese or chili or whatever and then competing against Bobby with their specialty.

I would love to be entered! As for reality TV, does Dancing with the Stars count? Not really, I guess, lol. That’s the only non scripted TV show that I currently watch. I did watch the first season of Survivor, but didn’t make it to the 2nd season. Thank you!!
looks very interesting

reality shows? hmmm.. nothing currently. None of the new ones strike my interest, and the old ones need a makeover. Unless you consider American Idol to be reality… i am ususally hooked to that each season.
It does sound intriguing, though I’m not too big a fan of reality shows. I’m also already subscribed to your RSS feed by email and I’m following you on Twitter (username: RSacks). I usually avoid watching reality shows, except American Idol sometimes, since I mostly find reality shows annoying.

The idea of a reality show really bothers me, but somehow I got hooked way back with The Real World! Of course, I’ve long outgrown that, but since Survivor took to the airways, I’ve been watching that. I watched The Apprentice for a few seasons. I LOVE the Amazing Race. And recently got hooked on Project Runway
